I start my beginning students off with learning to read music notation simply from a rudiment sheet and moving into a cd play a long book with basic drum rhythms and song structure. As drum instructor, I taught beats, fills, song structure, technique, and kit-setup, to a group between the ages of 7 and 14 in the summer of 2016 with the "Girls Rock Camp Houston", a non-profit organization. I volunteered to an additional guidance position as a "Band Coach" in 2016 to a group of young teen students. I have always believed that music is a conversation between the musician and the audience, and the instrument is the interpreter. With this in mind, with any age, I start with a regular conversation. Knowing the passion, interest level, and motivation of the students helps me create a method of teaching that is specific to the individual. I also learn their experience and knowledge level. Since I was genuinely passionate about it, I had no problem working through hours of tedious practice to learn the skills I have today. I can still lose track of time while practicing. For beginning students I start all the way at the beginning with the basics of percussion, from the way to hold the sticks and mallets, to how to read music. After the student grasps the fundamentals I introduce solo pieces to build a repertoire so that they may grow their musical knowledge and become a better musician.
