When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. I believe in a strong foundation for beginning students and I make sure that is the first part of every lesson, the same way an athlete exercises to stay in shape, a musician must also maintain the facility on their instrument. After fundamentals have been addressed the student moves to solo repertoire, one piece picked by the student, then one picked by me. For younger students, I'll usually use their band music or band methods to supplement class work, as well as offering my own exercises to strengthen fundamentals. Last year, one of my 2nd Grade Chicago Public School Band students performed the National Anthem for memory on the Alto Saxophone in front of 1000's of people at a race.
