For beginning voice I start with the fundamentals and breathing techniques. For beginning Clarinet lessons I start with the basics and fundamentals from assembling and disassembling the instrument along with proper cleaning, Storage and proper placement of fingers for playing and basic breathing techniques. The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. Last year, one of my 2nd Grade Chicago Public School Band students performed the National Anthem for memory on the Alto Saxophone in front of 1000's of people at a race. One of my 1st Grade Violin Students impressed the president of Columbia College of Music so much that my students were offered life-time scholarships to attend Blues Kid's Camp, held annually at Columbia College in Chicago. I am an upbeat energetic teacher who loves music and loves teaching. I have played saxophone since I was 8 years old, and I am now in my late 50's. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director.
