If they want to make their school's concert band, or state's district or allstate band, we can work on the required rep. If they'd like to learn to improvise or get better at improvisation no matter what style of music (I believe a diverse musican is a complete musician), I have many ways to help students improve, focusing on performing licks in 12 keys, song study and transcription, "hearing before you play," and jamming with me! I have over 15 years experience teaching privately as well as teaching band and orchestra in public schools. At one time I taught thirty-eight, half hour band and orchestra sessions every week. This included private Jazz ensembles and orchestra—all at the Elementary level. I taught 4th and 5th grade band and orchestra for the San Ramon Valley School District for 5 years as well as after-school ensembles for 9-11 year olds. Read More

The method of teaching is as follows: 1) assess where the student is in music and in life, 2) ask about goals in music, 3) formulate objective to reach those goals, 4) rethink things when needed (students aren't cookies, so I can't use a cookie cutter). I do focus on things in order though. If you don't know your fundamentals, then that's where we start no matter what. After learning fundamentals, however, we can begin to pick and choose the battles and wars. Read More
