As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. Developing respect and passion for music is paramount in music lessons. I don't believe in forcing method books and content that, at the end of the day, the student doesn't care about, on my students, they should have a voice in what their being taught. I tailor my teaching style to fit every single student differently. Young players must learn scales and etudes, but that is usually only for half of the lesson; the other half usually consists of finding inspirational performances and pieces that will be FUN for the both of us to learn.
