If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. Voice Students: I interview all voice students first to see what their goals are in voice study. Ive been playing Clarinet for 12 years, and in that time Ive been teaching for 6 years. In Florida I attended University of North Florida where I had the opportunity to perform virtuosic concertos with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Ocala Symphony Orchestra, and the University of North Florida Orchestra and Band. For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested.
