Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2009 I graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet performance. I have always felt that a good working instrument and body is vital to playing your best, so I studied instrument repair at Renton Technical College near Seattle, WA. After which I decided to study abroad where I played all over Europe in a number of Festivals. Between my time in WA and at Indiana I dabbled in instrument making and while in Europe I was able to also pursue this further giving me an intimate knowledge of how the clarinet works.
EXPERIENCE
I have always enjoyed teaching others and watching the lightbulb snap on with inspiration. I started teaching my fellow high school students and middle school students my junior and senior years of high school while guided by a Music Buddies program through my youth orchestra. I have tried to continue teaching privately ever since where ever I am. I have also taught some wonderful adult beginners, but I have mostly taught middle and high school students and understand the challenges of balancing school, possible work, with fitting in the time to work on and benefit from all that music programs have to offer at those ages.
METHODS USED
For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested.
LESSON STYLE
Every student approaches the instrument differently and has different needs and interests. Whoever I am teaching, I try to find some way to relate their hobby or other interest into what they need to learn. I believe the lesson sticks with the student for longer that way. It is important to me that students know how to play without incurring injuries in the future but at the same time to enjoy learning how to play. In lessons with me, there is always a balance between technique and music making. As an instrument repair technician, I also find it important to have a good working instrument, and it does not matter to me whether you would like to work with me or someone else in that regard.
