Clarinet is a wonderful instrument. It is not at all difficult to produce "a sound" on it. Producing a good sound, though, requires some work. Therefore, working on the sound quality is my first priority. Musicality is overall the most essential concept in music performance. I want students to learn what they're most interested in, with the caveat that I can teacg them a "song" or I can teach them the instrument and they can play any song. Whenever I can I play duets with the students. It makes what they're doing sound more like music. And I make mistakes. That shows that mistakes are no big deal (1 wrong note is a mistake. I am a third-year undergrad at NYU, studying Music Education with a concentration in instrumental performanceand I love it! Currently Im coaching a jazz ensemble at an NYC public middle school and am working with kids that might not have the resources to study privately. I took two semesters of clarinet pedagogy at KU and I frequently presented clinics to middle school students in Lawrence public schools.
