I am a musician, performer, and educator located in the Los Angeles area, in Pasadena. I recevied my MA in Music in 2013, concentraing in jazz. I wrote a MA thesis about current jazz music in Los Angeles. I am very passionate about teaching and have been teaching privately for 5 years. My main instrument is saxophone, but I also teach clarinet and piano up intil the intermediate level. I taught myself how to play the clarinet when I was 13 years old. In high school, I was accepted in to the California All State Honor Band my junior and senior years (2007, 2008). The experiences I had powerful and emotional impact on me, and it was then that I decided to dedicate a life to music through my clarinet. For stringed instruments, I uses the Suzuki method for teaching the basic repertory of the instruments. This method is an ear training method in which the student plays by ear. It starts out very simple so students of all ages can learn and progress very quickly. Jamie S. is a teacher, guitarist, singer/songwriter, saxophonist, and composing pianist. His teaching career began at the age of fourteen, as a volunteer in the Songcatchers, Inc. program, teaching saxophone and piano to underprivileged children in New Rochelle, NY. He went on to study music at the University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music. In 2007 he did an eight-month internship at Island Def Jam/Universal Music Group whilst living in Harlem, after which he completed an independent study on the modern music industry, and was awarded the first ever Bachelor of Arts Degree in Popular Music and Jazz from Rochester/Eastman. For children who are just starting, I use Bastien Piano Basics Primer Level-Level 2. From here, students graduate to selections primarily from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven. For adults I use Alfred's beginner adult course. I also supplement these books with several books that I have in my personal library, such as Keith's Snell's Essential Piano Repertoire. For scales I use Keith Snell's series and for technique I use Schaum's Fingerpower series. Read More
