It's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Sometime I would bring my soprano or tenor saxophone with me and create music with a student by trying to show him how music works. Read More

I have enjoyed teaching since High School, when I traveled to teach students by bus. Later I traveled by car to homes to teach, but have only taught in my studio for over 20 years. I find that the lessons are better where I have all of my wealth of music. I try to relate to each student personally, so they feel comfortable, and enjoy their lessons. Some students will respond to certain methods, while others need to be taught differently. Read More

I am a recent college graduate, so it hasn't been so long since I was taking lessons myself! That said, I've taught music in a wide variety of settings, from private lessons, to music summer camps, to instrumental demonstrations, to running college ensembles, and more. Because I'm still young, I remember what it was like not to understand certain topics within music, so I'm particularly good at figuring out where my students are getting stuck and helping them to look at it from a new point of view. I started teaching in high school, and I've been teaching consistently for the past 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. My methods vary by age group and skill level. I generally use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for students new to the clarinet then progress to Baermann Scale Studies as well as several different methods depending on the student's ability. In addition to etudes, solo repertoire is introduced, also based on the student's ability. Outside of playing the instrument, my lessons include reed fixing and balancing, practice techniques, performance anxiety reduction techniques, and for more advanced students, audition techniques. Every student approaches the instrument differently and has different needs and interests. Whoever I am teaching, I try to find some way to relate their hobby or other interest into what they need to learn. I believe the lesson sticks with the student for longer that way. It is important to me that students know how to play without incurring injuries in the future but at the same time to enjoy learning how to play. Read More
