For beginners, I like to start with the Rubank method books, which progress pretty rapidly. I also focus on tone production and scales as we move along at the level of the individual student. I gauge the speed at which we move based on the student in question, and prepare a practice routine for each student based on how much time they have to practice each day. No matter what age, any starting clarinetist needs to understand the fundamentals of the clarinet. Once these fundamentals are acquired, we move on to the basics of reading music and playing the clarinet such as learning the circle of fourths and practicing pieces of music that is from a certain major scale. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice.
