My teaching experience started while serving in the army as a saxophone, oboe, and clarinet player. The local music store referred middle school and high school students to me. I like to start students out with what they are already working on. If they are preparing for a concert in school or have a certain method book, that's where I assess their skills. For beginning students, I start with Essential Elements, or another comparable method if their band program uses another book. Once the student reaches middle school and has a good concept of fundamentals, we progress to the Himie Voxman Selected Studies and Duets books. For high school and advanced middle school students, I use the Baermann Division III book, the Klose Method, the Rose etudes for clarinet, as well as beginning to introduce appropriate solo repertoire. I am sort of involuntarily retired from a 30+ year career as a Worship and Music Pastor in several churches in the Midwest and eastern United States. I began church work in 1976 and left my last position in 2010. I enjoyed the opportunities to perform in several local productions of Broadway shows as well as many church-related solos and ensembles. I believe that the first thing you have to have is a good fundamental foundation. I always start with breathing correctly and assembling the instrument before playing notes. The core concepts I teach in the beginning are tone, dexterity, and tonguing. As for specific exercises, no two students are the same.
