Instruments: Clarinet Music
Each lesson, I will prepare 4 sections for my students: warm-up, review, learning new music, and questions/smart tips time. I believe fundamental techniques are super important for students to advance their music. I also pay attention to what students are interested in. The teacher should come up with a teaching method that will balance the different needs of the students. My goal is to instill a sense of music appreciation, while at the same time teaching students about the technical aspects of music. Read More

For my young beginning piano students, I apply the Piano Adventures Method by Nancy and Randall Faber. For my older beginning piano students (13/14 and up), I apply the Alfred Adult Piano Method to ensure the material meets the student at his/her academic level. As for all woodwind students, I apply the Reubank Methody (Beginning, Intermediate, Advance), alongside Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for students currently in a school band. Once each student has reached a satisfactory level of performance, solo repertoire is then introduced. Read More

I typically start woodwind students with the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method series. I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures Series or the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for piano instruction. In addition to the method book, I like to incorporate physical/breathing exercises, supplemental warm-ups, sight-reading, music theory worksheets, and student selected repertoire in lessons. I also encourage students to create their own compositions. In the past, I have digitally recorded many of my students' compositions and have really enjoyed encouraging students to express themselves through original composition. Read More

I meet each and every student at their own level, wherever that may be, and help them grow. I like to talk to each student or parent about their goals in music with the understanding that many are very different. I try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible for all of my students. I generally require a student to purchase a book depending on what they are working on. Read More

My teaching style is not rigid. I like to get to know the student and personalize the lesson plans so that they best fit the personality and needs of the pupil. I encourage hardwork and try to be prodding by making it clear that practicing is the only way to retain the concepts but I am not "strict." Ultimately I want musical learning to be a fun and self-fufilling experience for the student. Read More

The recording of each lesson gives students something to look forward to at the end of our session. Whether they think that they've done really poorly or extremely well, I encourage them to listen to themselves critically and prepare to share genuine feedback. Then we discuss both their strengths and the areas of opportunity for growth. This practice helps students progress over time. Eventually, they become more expressive, creative, confident, engaged and excited about learning and sharing their talents with others. Read More

I believe that developing a methodical way of practicing and thinking about music reading, tone production, and creating rhythm is the key to unlocking the ability of students to enjoy the music they produce. Therefore, my teaching style is methodical in that I try to be consistent with expectations for prepared material and activities for each lesson, while also being flexible to the unique needs of individual students. I also like to play with my students-- duets are a great way for students who are not in school ensemble to get a taste of what music is about, creating something beautiful with other people!
