I have always enjoyed teaching others and watching the lightbulb snap on with inspiration. I started teaching my fellow high school students and middle school students my junior and senior years of high school while guided by a Music Buddies program through my youth orchestra. I have tried to continue teaching privately ever since where ever I am. I have also taught some wonderful adult beginners, but I have mostly taught middle and high school students and understand the challenges of balancing school, possible work, with fitting in the time to work on and benefit from all that music programs have to offer at those ages. In each educational situation, I aim to establish clear goals and assignments, build confidence through positive reinforcement, and explain concepts in an engaging manner appropriate to each student. Over the years I've discovered that taught properly from day one, anyone can play the clarinet with ease! The clarinet is typically known as being a troublesome instrument to learn, but I have found that this is only due to poor hand technique and poor embouchure. Squeaks and squawks are only due to fingers not covering the holes, or too much mouth piece in the mouth. I usually start my beginning piano students who are children, in Alfred's Basic Piano Library, Lesson Book 1A. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. I also like to find out the student's individual interest and find repertoire that they are interested in learning and that are aligned with their current skills. Read More

I think that it is very important to teach not just how to play an instrument, but also the fundamentals of how music works and why. I create custom lesson plans so that my students not only learn to play the clarinet, but also gain fluency in music reading and music theory. Although method books are helpful tools, I do not consider myself or my students bound to them and I work with each student and their individual goals in order to craft lesson plans that work for both of us. I believe in music lessons there must be a balance. Especially on an instrument like guitar. Lessons should consist of a list of certain things almost like a checklist. First there is warm up and tuning. To make sure you are warmed up and in tune there are exersizes I like to start with my students.
