His music has been performed on stages worldwide, including Colombia, the USA, Japan, and Korea, by various clarinet quartets and wind orchestras. High-level artists have commissioned all the pieces for clarinet and clarinet ensembles, and their premieres have opened new artistic avenues for Juan. As a teacher, he has successfully mentored numerous students over the years, many of whom have gone on to complete university degrees in clarinet and composition. Read More

A true mix!! Songwriting came later and currently, I have two CD's of my own with original material on both. I've been teaching all ages from 8-88 since I was 18as a private music teacher and coach, inprivate and public schools and community centers. I created workshops and shows for my student's participation. Whether it's singing, learning piano, orchestral instuments or songwriting, I am delighted to bring my students where they aspire to reach. Read More

I like to use a wide variety of materials, from classical to jazz music.  CLARINET: For clarinet students, I use "standard" conservatory etude and scale books (such as the Rose Studies and Behrmann Studies).  I also use the Jamey Abersold Jazz Methods, which feature CD 'play-a-long' recordings of jazz music.  I also have my students perform a wide range of solo music, from 'standards' like the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to 20th century repertoire by composers like Bernstein, Copland and others.  I think it is important for students to be able to play jazz and improvise, so I teach them about Blues and how to play jazz, as well as classical music. I believe that it's best to learn by example, and in music this is often by demonstrating with the instrument. I will always have my instrument out to play along, or demonstrate what I am expecting. I expect my students to practice what is assigned to them so we can both have a productive session with each other, however I do understand that life happens. I try different techniques throughout the lesson to ensure that what I'm teaching is resonating with the student. Read More

My teaching experience began with giving private lessons in 1997 when I caught the 'teaching bug' seeing someone make actual progress and improvement. My teaching methods and training further developed during pedagogy classes and workshops during and after college. Performance experience includes formal recitals to complete my undergraduate degree, Portland Wind Symphony, Portland Community Wind Band, Northwest Wind Symphony, Opera Theater Oregon, Oregon Symphonic Band, North Coast Symphonic Band, Astoria Music Festival and a variety of small chamber ensembles. In 4th grade I got a recorder and from then on I've soaked up all the music experiences around me. I fondly remember my first solo performance was 5th grade, and my first honor band was that summer. By my senior year of high school I had been involved in a couple dozen honor bands/choirs/orchestras including an amazing tour of Europe in a 200 person band! I've taught individual lessons to little kids and elders, of all different skill levels, and strongly believe that it is never too late to learn an instrument. Read More

Instruments: Piano Saxophone Clarinet

I've been teaching students young and old for over 10 years how to improve on their instrument or in their field and achieve their goals. To me the most exciting thing about teaching one-on-one lessons is the ability to individualize each lesson to the particular students' needs, abilities and desires. I want my students to get out of their lessons what they want to get out of them, so I love working with students who have a good idea of what they are aiming for and are willing to work hard to get there.
