My love for teaching grew and throughout my college and post-college experience I taught clarinet lessons, music theory and appreciation to students of all ages. My primary instrument is Clarinet but there are a lot of basic things that could be used universally across all genres and instruments. I always stress the importance of foundation on and off the instrument. In addition to understanding the assembly of the Clarinet, breathe support, and embouchure training, I encourage students to have a basic knowledge of theory as we will begin to learn notes, rhythm, and scales. I think that it is very important to teach not just how to play an instrument, but also the fundamentals of how music works and why. I create custom lesson plans so that my students not only learn to play the clarinet, but also gain fluency in music reading and music theory. Although method books are helpful tools, I do not consider myself or my students bound to them and I work with each student and their individual goals in order to craft lesson plans that work for both of us. I began teaching private lessons eight years ago during college. By the end of 2015 I had a studio of over 30 students. I tend to focus on developing a student's sound concept first, so that they can get a beautiful sound out of the instrument at an early age. I also encourage students to play ear-training games and develop an independent melodic sensibility early on. My students have excelled in audition-only honor's ensembles, All-State Bands, band assessments, and some have even written their own songs and performed in recitals. Read More

I began teaching clarinet to beginners in high school, and 9 years later I maintain a small studio ranging from beginners learning fundamentals, to advanced high-schoolers preparing for college auditions, to masters students seeking supplementary lessons. My students have come from North America, Asia, and Australia. As a professional musician, I have performed in the United States, Germany, and Austria, and I have played with orchestras such as the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, Newport Symphony Orchestra, training ballet orchestra OrchestraNEXT, Clackamas Repertory Orchestra, and with school groups including HfM Trossingen Hochschuleorchester and University of Oregon Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Mike C, both with vocals and instrumental performance fuses together a combination of classical training, old school jazz, and funk, altogether bringing a creative, and soulful interpretation to music.  Mike's heart and soul penetrates each note he plays in a fashion that is characteristic of performers double his age. At the same time he has brought the advancements of electronic music technology into his performance and composition expanding his sonic palette beyond "one horn, one sound." Mike's recording credits include the independant films "A Cup of Coffee" and "The Masterpiece." He has also performed live with The Crests, Melvin Sparks, in the Bahamas with Barry Newman, and appeared at such festivals as Woodstock, Riverhead Blues Festival, movie premier party for "The Prince of Central Park", The Bayou Music Festival, The Blues 2000 Festival, Lead vocals and saxophone for Pulse Productions, as a frequent performer both in lead vocals and sax at the Trump Casino's in Atlantic City as well as Empire City Casino.  Mike currently holds a Masters degree in Music Education from William Paterson University and is a New Jersey Certified music teacher with 16 years experience  teaching, K-6 band, general music, and chorus, music and movment for Autistic and special service students, as well as High School dance club.
