For young children I usually use the Suzuki method books for song selection and through those we can focus on the basic fundamentals of positioning and technical development. It is easy to see what needs to be addressed through those first few songs and we can go from there. Generally, for my beginning students, I assign a regiment of short pieces and technical etudes from a variety of method books. I find this to be an effective way to build technique while also cultivating musicality. I have been successful with several of my students where some have won scholarships, solo playing, and early duets, trios and quartets. My students range from beginners to advance playing, and each student is different and requires different approaches. Regardless, I teach the same technical skills to all my students just in different ways so that they accomplish something from each lesson.
