I am a cellist, composer, and teacher currently residing in Upper Manhattan. I love performing, teaching, and creating exciting new music with all of my friends and students. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Music at the Manhattan School of Music, with an emphasis in Contemporary Performance. American cellist Sarah is active as both a performer and pedagogue in New York City. She is a member of the innovative ensemble, The Orchestra Now, under the leadership of Leon Botstein. Prior to joining TON, Sarah served as principal cello of the Mannes Orchestra and the Mannes Opera Orchestra. She has also served as principal cello for the Arezzo Opera Festival (Arezzo, Italy), MACE (Mannes American Composers Ensemble), Apotheosis Opera (New York, NY), the Joffrey Ballet School (New York, NY), and has performed in Carnegie Halls Stern/Perelman Auditorium, Alice Tully Hall, Severance Hall, Civic Hall and Symphony Space, among many others. It is extremely important that students not only have fun during lessons, but that they also feel challenged. Every lesson is a small step out of the comfort zone - it may or may not be noticed, but the step is take none-the-less. The lessons I teach are inclusive and may include snippets from other subjects - such as history, science, or math. I find that really engaging the student's thought process gives them a more open perspective to approach music with. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and "I Can Read Music" to get acquainted with the basic techniques of the instrument and note reading. It is always more fun to play with others, so I typically start playing duets with students as early as possible. For older and more advanced students, I begin with scales and etudes suited towards their needs, followed by a solo or concerto piece for cello, and then end the lesson with a duet or time to work on orchestral music, improvising, or any fun piece that the students request. I typically begin a piano student's first lesson, with the Bastien Piano series. This is geared at kid's, but, for adults, I use various other beginner books! In addition to this, I pride myself on teaching all students, how to best play popular music, using a full range of chords, not typically taught. I get students learning quickly and more importantly, correctly, so they are prepared out there, in the real musical world! Read More
