Moreover, apply what they have learned and perform in front of audiences will help them building confidence. Respectability is also a vital aspect of teaching. A student must be allowed to explore his or her own imagination with the guidance of the teacher. This means a teacher cannot dictate, but a guide. I would never order students to do exactly what I tell them to do. For example, students could come up with their own fingerings, bowings, or musical ideas which enables their critical thinking. The golden rule of teaching music for me is to always offer a challenge that the student can manage, whether it be a very small degree of difficulty or a larger degree of difficulty. Learning is its own reward and both are essential to nurture and sustain interest in learning to play an instrument. A students ability to absorb and retain information is an integral part of their evolving psychological and musical maturity. Read More

While the relationship every teacher and student will be different, I strive to find a balance of discovery and fun with determination and work. Developing skill at a musical instrument is difficult and takes time! Nurturing my students' love of music is essential to helping them persevere through the challenges of learning. Based on students' goals, we develop roadmaps together to help pace their growth. Every lesson is an opportunity to evaluate and adjust those goals, and consistent lessons means that there will always be clear communication about where a student is at and where they want to go! My two rules of teaching are to be encouraging and be engaging. I don't want students dragging their feet as they walk to their lesson. I want them sprinting up the stairs and ringing my bell several times, because they are so excited to get started! I keep the lessons challenging in order to allow the student to reach their full potential. However, I like to keep things fun and enjoyable. Read More
