My work with the DCYOP, an El-Sistema inspired program, involves teaching the basics of playing the violin, viola, cello and music theory, adjudicating students’ progress, leading sectionals and full rehearsals in various DC schools, some from the most underserved communities. Highlights are having all the different schools come together for a large performance at the Kennedy Center and the students performances with Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Esperanza Spalding. I’ve also facilitated many youth orchestra performances and summer camps as string teaching artist in DC and Maryland showcasing that I can motivate the students to a high quality performance regardless of the amount of time. First of all, I always make my students enjoy music when they are learning anything from me. With beginners, I always be patient and kind, especially with young kids. Always singing songs with them, playing together with them and at the same time we will do some music games together. It helps young kids to get to know music and at the same time they won't get bored! For beginning students, I typically start with Suzuki repertories with classical cello training. I have received Suzuki training at Cleveland of the Institute of Music. I emphasize on scales and etudes which are foundations for cello playing. In addition, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance. I love cultivating an environment for young ones that both excites them and keeps them learning as much material as possible from the get-go. Young students are incredibly smart and spongey and I love learning from my own students the growth and knowledge that is actually possible to cultivate in young students.
