For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and incorporate Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney as they progress to higher levels of difficulty. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I use the Belwin Mills and String Builder books, also Klengel Technical Studies as well as Harvey S Whistler Position Books. Selected repertoire as the student advances. For beginning adults I try to determine exactly what they are wanting to achieve by starting an instrument at this point in life. For the beginner I determine what kind of talent they have and how to proceed with lessons. Learning an instrument is hard - and practice time at home is essential and must be consistent to progress. I quicly began to seek out a way to teach music before I was in college and built a small studio of beginner cellists in my home town. Once a student has progressed and is genuinly interested in playing cello, I start to study with a more serious repertoir as a easy classical pieces and some popular kid's songs.
