With beginning students, I use exercises from Suzuki and Essential Elements books as a basis for note reading, but I also frequently use "echo" or "call-and-response" playing. I find this is especially important in developing a student's ear for pitch and tone early on. For beginning students, my main goal is to lead them to appreciate and love music for the rest of their lives. I work on fundamentals like the proper posture, developing good ears for correct tones, and how to correctly hold the bow. A perfect understanding of basics goes a long way. All students are encouraged to find level-appropriate pieces (that don't have to be classical!) they wish to play, and I will do my best to help them achieve their request and can provide suggestions as well. I try to incorporate songs and tunes outside of the classical genre into my assignments to keep students' practice sessions fun, and for students interested in learning non-classical cello, we can work together to create a curriculum that fits your needs. I am trained in the Suzuki method and will typically start my beginning cello students in this if they are not already interested in another method. If you are interested in a different method I will typically alter my teaching to accommodate. Early lessons typically work on establishing a strong technical foundation so the student will be able to pursue music that speaks to them. I am a younger instructor who is very excited and passionate about the inter- and intra-personal aspects of music and teaching music.
