A wonderfully laid out book for beginners that are interested in pop music is "The Funky Primer." I also like to teach the reading of rhythms out of a book by Ted Reed called "Syncopation for the Modern Drummer." This is a great book that you can work out of for many many years to come. I like to let a student learn at his/her own pace, as long as they are focused and putting in the effort. If somebody is a complete beginner, we'll likely begin by learning about basic elements of music (pitch, rhythm) as well as basics of the instrument (tuning, right hand/left hand placement and technique).
