My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. I really emphasize getting students to read music and also understand the key components of music theory, so that they understand what it is they are playing. Read More

There's nothing better than seeing the face of a student light up when they've learned something I've showed them that they weren't able to play before. Music is my life, I've been playing drums for as long as I can remember - it all started on pots and pans. I'm very passionate about music and take it very seriously but I do like to have fun along the way. My father plays drums as well, that is what inspired and motivated me to play. Read More

I have always had fun learning and making music, so to help someone else do the same is my primary objective. Read More

During my first meeting with a new student I ask them questions about their prior experiences, current knowledge, and musical aspirations. From there I tailor a unique learning strategy geared towards their goals, personality, and aptitude. I always try to use music that the student enjoys to spotlight the concept we are covering, and encourage the student to think about it while they listen to their favorite songs. The greatest payoff I can think of is when a student gets the immediate satisfaction that comes along with hearing an audience cheer for them after a good performance, and I do my best to curate these opportunities! Regardless of their ages, I always attempt to establish what a student's interests in music are as well as their background and present faculties if applicable. From there, I attempt to develop an understanding of musical fundamentals (pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics) as they apply to their interests. It is crucial in my opinion to connect these essential elements of music to the context of a student's musical world. I have several books that I use regularly for examples and also, I write individual exercises for more specific issues with a student's technique and approach. Read More
