I always start with the absolute foundation and fundamentals of music. I find when I start teaching students that have taken lessons previously, there are many holes in their understanding of their respective instrument and understanding of music in general. Consistency and steady progression is vital. What method books I recommend vary depending on the instrument and will be discussed prior to the first lesson. For beginner students, I like to use the Faber books or the Thompson method for piano. I also encourage students of all ages to share what they enjoy listening to and incorporate songs they enjoy as early as possible. As students progress I get into more in depth concepts in music theory and improvisation, to provide a foundation in the language of contemporary music.
