I always begin with an interview to get a feel for the student’s level and interest. I start out with basics; musical alphabet, finding keys in the piano, finger numbers, listening. The method books I prefer are the Music Tree series, the Schaum series, Bastien notecards and i have recently began looking into Piano Pronto. Next, knowing what type of sound one wants to deliver or put out into the world is important, because no one wants to feel uncomfortable singing something that isnt for them. People receive more when the artist or vocalist shows confidence and a natural joy or love for what their singing. So knowing what kind of singer and style you want to sing in is important. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
