Ive been teaching voice for over 5 years. My students ages range from 10 to 80 and they are In different levels and have different goals/interests. Although Im classically trained and I have many students following a classical path, using the bel canto technique, Im able to provide the student with tools to sing any genre, and for that I use a Cross Training technique, which embraces classical and vernacular styles, such as pop, rock, musical theater, Brazilian music (like samba and bossa nova). I have been teaching for eight years, I have taught privately, in group settings, and with students of all ages. I have found that one of the most important things to have in a student teacher relationship is trust. If a student does not trust his or her teacher than they will be less encouraged to learn and practice. I have also found that building this kind of relationship will also help students to develop a love for music, maybe not in the way that I did, but in a way that is over all beneficial to their character and life philosophy. I always begin a lesson with a warm up. This can look different depending on the student, however I emphasize the importance of warming up your lungs, fingers, embouchure, and body. I then move to scales. For my beginner students, I use methods to learn the quick fingerings that is needed for basic fundamentals as well as exercises that assist in how we blow into the flute.
