My main goal is to enable my students to develop a passion for music! I employ an individual approach for every student according to his/her skills and abilities. Discussing music, listening to a broad range of music are vital elements of my practice. We may talk about composers and performers of different eras and genres, emotional and historical aspects of particular music and I of course encourage students to listen to music at home providing suggestions. I first ask the student to play so I can hear him/her. After a student plays a short piece of music of their own choosing I can determine what the next step is. Each student has his/her own individual needs. In general though I focus on 3 key elements: 1) Sound quality 2) Technical dexterity (how the fingers deal with the twists and turns of the instrument) 3) Reading Music If a student has a specific genre of music that he/she wants to focus on then I mainly concentrate on that. I like to tailor my lesson plans to each individual student. For vocalists, I take age and ability into account and will usually target one or two elements of technique at a time. Once I have a grasp on their level and voice type and what sorts of music they are interested in, I will pick out repertoire that will be fun and challenging for the student, and will put into practice the elements of technique we work on in warm ups. I am an active performer and educator in the NYC area. I graduated Cum Lade from The City College of NY and received a Bachelors degree of fine arts in Jazz performance. I love sharing my enthusiasm for life and music and teaching is my way to give back to future generations who will shape society and culture. I have been fortunate to travel the world playing music in places like Denmark, Finland, Cape Verde, Colombia and all over the United States in places like The Kennedy Center, Millennium Stage in Chicago and the Lincoln Center just to name a few. Like stated above, I strive to make my lessons fun and engaging above all else. Of course we need to also learn in the lesson, but I typically gage lesson plans around a student's areas of interest. Some people really enjoy learning from books and exercises, while others are more engaged learning songs and music that they listen to. Whatever your preferences are, we can tailor our lessons around them and find new ways to get you practicing and learning new material. Read More
