Depending on the instrument I’m teaching and the skill level of the student I’m usually going to start of with a 10 to 15 minute session of evaluation and assessment of needs acquired skills and students desires .we can then begin with exercising proper warm up posture and position .and run through warm up scales and learn rutiments or attack the desired skill requirements straight ahead depending on the students development.Music is an art and a discipline.it is a relationship one has with there instrument.my songs and instruments become like family ,well charrished!!!! Generally, I find that students that can read music can understand music concepts a lot better that those that don't read music. That being said, there are students that don't want to learn to read and I understand that as well. For those students there are many methods available that can help them achieve what they want. For beginning students I like to focus attention on fundamental technique on both hands, making sure that they use the correct finger positioning on the bass. As they advance, the student will begin to know the whole fretboard through scales and arpeggios (in all keys) so the student knows where all the notes are in the instrument.
