I don't believe that there is any single "right" way to make or produce music. Music is an international language that transcends boundaries of statehood, culture, and identity. As a South African, I was raised on the drumbeats and rhythms of traditional Zulu and Xhosa folk music. Upon moving to the UK, I received classical "western" training in drum kit, chorus, and piano. In my professional career, I learned the "rules" of recording and production, mastering Pro Tools under the tutelage of some of the finest producers in the business. Read More

Very individualized instruction. The focus of the lessons depends on the student. The goal is to use the guitar or bass as a vehicle of self expression. Bringing creativity, in the form of writing or improvising, to the lessons enriches the experience of playing any music. I believe in music as an aural language. I believe there is equal benefit in transcribing recorded music as from reading from the printed page. Read More

I'm very nice and patient with students, but I'm also very sink-or-swim. For example, if a student is trying to play a melody they know, I won't simply write it out for them and have them recite it: I'll push them to figure it out themselves and develop their ear. I'll of course step in at any significant roadblocks but people tend to make a lot of progress when they're pushed to do it themselves. Read More

I usually start by assessing my student's current level. If my student is a complete beginner, I have a tried and true method of getting them started quickly. Once the student has mastered the fundamentals, I will present additional exercises and songs to work on. For students that are already experienced players, I create a lesson plan that matches their level and their goals. Usually, I work on songs, incorporate technique and music theory exercises, and do not just learn them boringly. Read More

I've been teaching now for 3 years and it has been a welcomed alternative to my former day job of working in a corporate environment in New York City. I started informally teaching my friends as far back as 10 years ago and it has evolved into a serious passion of mine. I have taught a wide range of students ranging from 10 to 50 years of age with an eclectic array of learning styles and musical preferences. Read More

My approach to teaching varies in accordance with a students playing level and needs. With beginners and young students, experience has taught me that it is best to get someone playing actual music as soon as possible, usually in the first lesson. It is just as well to have a student begin by learning a simple riff from a song that they like, as to make them learn some hokey melody from a one size fits all how-to book.Going forward, I continue to work with a new player on music that they would like to play, while simultaneously covering music theory, and technical information, as they relate to the choice of repertoire.
