Hello! I'm Clay and I love to teach Bass Guitar! In 2006, I graduated from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. I've played and toured many venues throughout the U.S. and have a great deal of studio experience as well. I've been able to meet and play with many great artists throughout my career and hope to continue to connect with many more! Read More

My strategy generally is to focus on fundamentals as well as effective strategies for practicing at home. I have found that most improvement happens at home in your living room on your 3rd or 4th practice session of the week, which is one of the most fulfilling feelings in the world. Lessons then become a pit stop for encouragement, updating goals and strategies, and learning a little of the why behind the what (music theory). Read More

My approach is both traditional and also contemporary.. I use standard method books that have been around for years. I don't like to generalize on one or two methods. I cater the lessons to the individual student. Some may have a wide musical background. Some may not have any. Sight reading and method books are a must. I teach classical piano but also incorporate contemporary songs usually something that the student may request. Read More

For students who are just starting to learn a new instrument, I would start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements method book. As the student progresses and has a good understanding of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their skill level. I try to find out what all of my students are interested in, and I adjust my instruction accordingly to make sure that the lessons are always engaging, and fun. Read More

I knew that I wanted to be a teacher before I ever touched a guitar. Growing up in a family of school teachers allowed me to see the broad spectrum of the educaGonal process, from designing lesson plans to filing report cards, and I quickly realized that a teacher doesn’t stop working when the bell rings. Teaching history out of a textbook is one thing...teaching a student to hear the color of an altered dominant chord is a totally different beast. Read More

Solitary strumming gave way to manic collaboration. I entered Swarthmore College with delusions of becoming some sort of academic, but quickly switched to a music major, finding it impossible to concentrate on anything else. Swarthmore only taught western classical music, and I was immediately out of my depth, cramming the fundamentals of music reading two weeks before my first theory course. Fortunately, this educational twist was a blessing in disguise; traditions collided and sparks flew. Read More

I'm an engaging and energetic musician/teacher that thrives in helping my students discover their passion for music. After graduating from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts (concentration in Creative Writing and Jazz Studies) in 2005, I have spent the past 17 years helping hundreds of private students of all ages, ability levels, backgrounds, and styles discover their musical voice on their chosen instrument. As an active performing musician, I've played in a variety of bands/contexts in my local community, helping to support, create, and grow the local music scene, while encouraging my students to perform while providing them advice on how to best do so.
