IF a bassist does not have a strong sense of rhythm, the ensemble will not work well, and the bassist will have a difficult time being able to play comfortably with a drummer. However if a student is a beginner, I will start him/her off comfortably playing the instrument. Eventually I will introduce music theory and scales, sight-reading music constructing walking baselines etc etc. If a student is more advanced, I will enforce the 4 T's I talked about and make sure to incorporate what he/she wishes to work on or learn. Piano Marvel and Alfred's piano methods are a great start for all ages as they have books that are geared toward both younger and older beginners. For guitar and bass there are various Hal Leonard books that work well; one thing that I try to do with guitar and bass students is encourage them to know what note they are playing and to eventually read music notation if they are curious and interested in it. For beginning students I like to get them to have proper technique when it comes to the right and left hand placement on the bass. I also like them to get familiar with a sense of time so I use a metronome and teach them about how the beat works along with playing the notes on the bass. For intermediate students I gauge their knowledge of music theory such as scales and arpeggios and work on those along with tackling songs that they might want to play. Read More

With students that are full beginners, I like to start them out with some reading to show them how time is divided and how to identify notes on the staff. I've found that finding notes on the staff helps them learn the notes on the fretboard faster and easier. I use a book called Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard. For students who are more advanced, I will focus on their time feel, sound, and music theory. Read More

I have taught for over twenty years to all ages and levels. I teach the fun way by teaching the student what they would like to know by tailoring each lesson to fit there personal goals, needs and questions. I've taught all genres and also teach special needs including autistic, handicapped, and blind. As well I've also taught a couple grammy winning musicians. I encourage good effective practice methods instead of long tedious hours I prefer the student to concentrate on quality above quantity. Read More

In my experience as a teacher, I have worked on a personal level with my students encouraging regular practice. It's important to get to know the student and keep track of their evolution. I notice that the students who advance the most are the ones who experience playing with other people. Possibly one of the best ways to learn music is being in a band. I encourage my students to have projects like this because it helps them understand quickly what music is all about. Read More

I believe that motivation begins with excitement and there is no better way to help a student stick to a practice routine than teaching him or her to play their favorite songs. Of course, a knowledge of music theory is very important, but I always make sure that we don't get bogged down in minutia, and that each student is allowed to proceed at his or her own pace. A practical and usable knowledge of music's fundamentals is employed to get results and keep the student motivated and actively learning. Read More
