As a beginner student, we may start with left right hand coordination and instrument positioning, we'll work on motor skills and get started on developing fun practice habits. As we progress, we'll begin to apply concepts in a musical context by learning progressions to popular songs and analyzing why they work. When I begin with a new student, I generally jam and analyze my student's abilities, skill level, techniques and interests/desires in music styles. When I have a good idea about my student's ability and skill level, we begin with focusing on what needs to be improved. For beginner children, I like to focus on the fundamentals and keep interest with keeping things creative, exciting and fun!
