I typically start off by assessing if the student is a beginner, intermediate or advanced. Once the student's skill level has been assessed, a lesson plan will be formulated to best fit their needs. However, for students around beginner level, there is certain mandatory curriculum I teach in order for the student to have a solid fundamental understanding both on the instrument and for music in general. We will mostly focus on technique and theory, performance, as well as more creative and abstract musical aspects. Read More

Perhaps we could make up a new song with the note names. Or for example an older adult who is having memory problems for learning a new piece, but is very good at associating the sound of music with a feeling or image. Perhaps we could take the music in smaller chunks with an image association for each new musical chunk. It makes me very happy to watch each individual begin to understand and harness their own personal strengths during the learning process. Read More

For the beginning students we start learning all the fundamentals and details of the bass ie; string names, notes on the fingerboard, right and left hand technique, and how to get the sounds you are striving for on the bass. For more intermediate to advanced students, we learn to apply all modes, scales, chords etc... in creating walking bass lines, funk and groove lines, and how to solo over chord changes. Read More

Nothing is more encouraging than seeing students get excited about progressing and getting closer to their goals! I love to see students nail their jazz band auditions into high school or college, or seeing them get their first recording session from a major artist. Equally fulfilling is seeing beginners play their first C major scale with proper hand position and fingering! I can personally tailor my instruction style based on the student as we all learn differently, and teaching them always inspires myself to get better every day! Read More

My goal for every student especially the beginners is to make them play like a pro as soon as possible with emphasis on playing music by ear. My way of teaching is kind of unconventional because based on my experience, it took me a long time before I was able to play any song that I like since reading notes would require unwavering attention and huge effort depending on student’s skills to be able to play it perfectly. I mostly do paperless. Less money involved, less waste of papers. I use a lot of videos and recordings. The principal instrument that needs to be trained is the hears. Brain and fingers immediately after. When a method is necessary, based on level of the student and topics studied, I recommend Creative Guitar by Guthrie Govan 1 and 2; Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick and The Lesson by Victor Wooten. This last one is not properly a method, but an incredible book about music and musicians, that teaches more than the big majority of methods out there Read More
