I try to approach each student as an individual. Every student has their own level of enthusiasm, patience, willingness, and availability. Learning music should always be fun and rewarding first and foremost. I believe in building a good teacher/student relationship and pushing my students beyond what they believe their limits are. Learning music is a never ending process. I want my students to be able to learn and grow outside of the lesson room. Read More

I work with the student to learn what they are interested in learning. All my students learn to read traditional notation as well as tablature. I like method books like Hal Leonard , especially for the complete beginner - but  I supplement with other repertoire I have found throughout the years. I encourage beginning with a nylon string guitar because it is easier on the fingers! I incorporate music theory in all of my teaching. Read More

I believe in music lessons there must be a balance. Especially on an instrument like guitar. Lessons should consist of a list of certain things almost like a checklist. First there is warm up and tuning. To make sure you are warmed up and in tune there are exersizes I like to start with my students. Once they are feeling warmed up I like to move on to sight reading and notation reading (practiced and unpracticed material) as well as scales, intervals, and arpeggios. Read More

I began teaching the summer before my last year of my undergrad (summer of 2012) I worked at a few studios outside Pittsburgh (Batavia Studios in Mars, PA and Manella Guitars in Monroeville.) Since moving to NJ I got a couple more gigs as a teacher through recommendations (Westerhoff School of Music and Art in Metuchen and Music Tech in South Brunswick.) I also have a few private students. Last summer I worked at the Rutgers Summer Jazz Institute, a one week summer camp for high school kids. Read More

The first thing I ask a student is what kind of music they enjoy. What we love to hear is almost always what we want to play. As someone with ADHD I completely understand and empathize with students who have a difficult time focusing and a different way of understanding a concept. Taking a breath and a stretch can sometimes be the best cure for learner's block. Pointing out real progress is one of the best way to fuel the desire to learn more and is itself a reward! Read More

I truly enjoy seeing my students get better and better - then I know I'm doing my job. That also means they are enjoying themselves and enjoying the process of learning and the fact that their skill level is increasing - and that's exciting to witness. I'm very encouraging, patient, and go very slow to make sure the student is understanding the instruction. My focus is on the student, their interest in the instrument and if they are enjoying the experience. Read More

For Adults I talk about what styles and types of music they're into followed by a list of goals to see what they'd like to get out of lessons. I teach out of the following books "The New Breed", Gary Chester, "Drummers Complete Vocabulary" as taught by Alan Dawson, John Ramsay, "Syncopation for the Modern Drummer", Ted Reed. I also assign transcription projects for the student to perform. I like to provide enough of a challenge to keep the student motivated. Read More
