I use what some have called the target approach. With this method you are working on one concept at a time, and you should always have one concept in mind while you practice. My method varies depending on the student. If the student wants a traditional musical approach, and is interested in learning notation and theory, then we will usually start with the Hal Leonard Book Series. If the student doesn’t want to learn notes or the more advanced musical concepts, I usually just start by teaching them simple songs that they know from the radio, TV Shows or movies. Depending on the students interest and needs I will typically introduce my beginner students with some scales and etudes from Simandl's 30 etudes book. As well Simandl Book one is a wonderful book to introduce the positions on the bass and has many helpful exercises inside. I base all my teaching on all the different private lessons I've received over my 10+ years of playing and learning guitar with very different guitarists/musicians. I started playing when I was 11, but I find that for any beginner, it's important to start with material that gets instant "musical" sound from the guitar. I believe this consists on working on basic chords which you can use to start singing songs, or learning some easy riffs or melodies that will have you playing music in a matter of a few weeks.
