I was taught primarily in the William Leavitt method, and use these resources to introduce students to the basics of sight-reading, theory, and technique. My personal preference is not to adhere too strictly to any one method however, instead focusing on the application of theory within a more active musical context. Improvisation is extremely important to developing a working understanding of music in my opinion, and much of my lessons are based in actively performing progressions with students, focusing on both comping and soloing. I will always reinforce my lessons with method books such as William Leavitt's modern methods for guitar and reading studies, while also transcribing songs for students and creating lesson plans and diagrams for them. I like to let a student learn at his/her own pace, as long as they are focused and putting in the effort. If somebody is a complete beginner, we'll likely begin by learning about basic elements of music (pitch, rhythm) as well as basics of the instrument (tuning, right hand/left hand placement and technique).
