I was taught primarily in the William Leavitt method, and use these resources to introduce students to the basics of sight-reading, theory, and technique. My personal preference is not to adhere too strictly to any one method however, instead focusing on the application of theory within a more active musical context. Improvisation is extremely important to developing a working understanding of music in my opinion, and much of my lessons are based in actively performing progressions with students, focusing on both comping and soloing. I started teaching in a local studio while I was going to college. I majored in jazz guitar and minored in classical piano. Had some education classes but a classroom was not for me. My method varies depending on the student. If the student wants a traditional musical approach, and is interested in learning notation and theory, then we will usually start with the Hal Leonard Book Series. If the student doesn’t want to learn notes or the more advanced musical concepts, I usually just start by teaching them simple songs that they know from the radio, TV Shows or movies. I started teaching friends various instruments and general music theory as a freshman. Then I continued my teaching with tutoring my fellow bass students with more difficult material. Now, after having graduated from Rowan University, I teach with the Resonance School of Music teaching guitar, clarinet electric bass and upright bass. While Resonance is certainly a more traditional approach, I like to think I balance it out by also teaching at a School of Rock, giving instruction on both guitar and electric bass. Read More
