I always ask what their goals with music are, as I will then tailor the lessons accordingly. If a student says to me that they want to work towards an audition, I know that I can push them harder in terms of expectation and material. You can learn so much about a student in a 30 minute trial lesson! If a new student is not a total beginner, I will ask them to play their favorite song (or one of their favorites if they have trouble choosing just one). After their performance, I ask them what they liked about how they played. Its important for students to always be aware of what they do well. If they arent able to see their strengths on their own then I share with them what I think their strengths are and encourage them to keep that up. Read More

I’m appreciative that they take the time to reach out to me instead of coming to the next lesson unprepared. I do encourage the importance of learning standard music notation because I believe that it helps understand the big picture of music. I believe that not knowing how to read standard music notation is akin to speaking a language but not being able to read or write it. I like to divide my lessons in two parts: first we address the most formal aspects of the lesson, most of the times using a method book or given hand-outs or whatever relevant material was suggested to the student; the remainder of the lesson is dedicated to work on the students choice of a song or anything less formal suggested by myself. In 2012, I had the chance to attended the yearly Summer Berklee Program, which takes place in Perugia (Italy) during the Umbria Jazz festival and I won a scholarship for the yearly Berklee Summer Camp. A year later I attended the Five-Week program at Berklee, Boston and got another scholarship that allowed me to enroll at Berklee College of Music in 2014 as an undergraduate student.
