My methods of instruction are taylor made for each individual student. For example I will teach a beginner student that wants to learn the guitar as an instrument and music theory basic technique, chords, scales, and how to read music, as well as enjoyable songs that capture their personal interests. I prefer Mel Bay instruction books and encourage playing by ear that is appropriate to the level of the student. Read More

As far as my teaching methods go, I do not use any of the course books commonly used by many teachers and studios. I feel that this cookie cutter approach doesnt successfully work for everybody as it assumes everyone is the same. I have taught thousands of students over the decades and can say that I havent seen two students exactly alike the entire time. Instead I get to know the students and their goals and streamline a method to get them to accomplish their goals in the shortest possible time. Read More

My methods vary depending on skill level, but with every student I begin by examining their understanding of theory as I believe theory is the basis of all music. I then like to get an understanding of what their main goals are, whether that be learning to play music for friends and family all the way up to making a career out of it. My experience in audio engineering, management, and producing also allows me to help students plan for a solid future career in whatever field suits them. Read More

After college I continued to gig professionally, tour, and record and kept up a private studio where I taught upright bass, electric bass and guitar. I kept working and added voice, piano, drums and ukulele to the roster of instruments that I could teach after working for BandWorks- a school of rock- and at the Bird School of Music. I've played a diverse range of music from Afro-beat, Latin, Latin Jazz, RB and Soul to Rock, Funk, Hip-Hop, Pop, Avant-garde, Jam, Americana, and Bluegrass and it has helped me to see the fundamental similarities that exist in all styles. For beginning students that are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements or any other book that has the basic principles of music in them. Once the student has progressed and has a good grasp of the fundamentals, I will bring in other repertoire appropriate to their level. For adults, I like to find out what the student is interested in and then tailor the lesson toward that to keep lessons engaging and fun no matter what their abilities are. I always try to keep the lessons fun and entertaining. I simply enjoy helping people establish and accomplish their goals on their instruments. The first step is to identify what holds a student's attention. What is it about music that has motivated them to study? Not everyone has the same goal or vision, which is a good thing. Even self-taught musicians incorporate theory and harmony into their compositions. My personal style toggles between when I was 14 learning Metallica songs to the present, having studied jazz and classical harmony. Read More
