As previously stated, I believe that each session should be individualized to best suit each student's needs. For a typical beginner, I will first teach posture and note identification followed by basic warm-ups. Once the basics are taught, the student will be allowed more flexibility in the repertoire and specific skills he/she wants to learn. For children, I may teach fun, short, simple songs first to keep the student engaged. Read More

To me, it is most important that a student feels successful in what they have accomplished each lesson. Every student progresses at their own rate and it's important to give students attainable short-term goals in the service of long-term achievements. It is also important to know what drives each student and understand why they want to take private lessons. This will give the student a degree of inspiration which us as teachers can use to help them stay focused and interested in continuing with their studies. Read More

For the absolute beginner, I generally, will start with the absolute basic foundation. This includes, correct posture, basic playing essentials, guitar setup and tuning. No one plays a guitar well when the strings are a half inch off the fretboard! So, I help my students get their guitar setup for optimum playability. I usually do this in the first or second lesson. As the student begins to learn we start to work into the actual playing of the guitar. Read More

I try to be as laid-back and disarming as possible. Ultimately, playing music is supposed to be fun and so I never want to stop communicating that to students of any age. I have a lot of students who have been with me for years and I believe that speaks to my ability to connect with them on a musical and personal level and make lessons fun but always productive. I began teaching as part of my college degree curriculum as a student and my love for teaching expanded into private lessons which continue into the present day. I really enjoy helping my students find and cultivate a real love for music. I encourage regular and devoted practice time in order for my students to enjoy the rewarding experience that music will bring their lives. I look for the individual goals that my students would like to accomplish and provide a path for them to be able to achieve those goals. Read More
