For beginning students of any age, I focus a lot on technique and building good habits. I will always use Stick Control by G.L. Stone, which has great material for a beginner drummer/percussionist. I began teaching when I was 17 and have a pretty busy schedule of up to 35 students a week! Many of those students still continue to take lessons after 3 years of instruction and have improved beyond their original goals. I find that each student has different interests (rock, jazz, classical, pop, etc.) which is why I enjoy focusing on what they want to learn. Other students do not know exactly what they want to learn; however, they just want to improve in playing their instrument all around. Read More

Upon mastery of a few fundamental skills, students are introduced to a range of compositions that they can choose to learn to study and to play. For all my students at various levels, I assess their abilities and consistently challenge them to sharpen their skills. Now i'm incorporating concentration, breathing, counting and stretching exercises. Read More

For every student, I initally assess why they are taking lessons and what their goals are. Together we create a plan to acheive those goals. For young beginners, I like the FJH guitar series. It was written by guitar educators. I also teach the student to play fun songs and tunes to supplmement the books. For teens and adults, the path depends on their goals, which aren't always in a book. Read More
