There’s a million different approaches, and we’ll find the one(s) that work best for you. Everyone (even more traditional classical players) tend to take their own path to guitar mastery. This is in part why new techniques and styles of playing are popping up all the time! When starting out, I like to lay a good foundation; teaching students proper hand positioning and posture first. I like to combine this with some single string exercises and some basic chords and strumming patterns that can be used musically, and applied to learning parts or simplified versions of songs the student is familiar with and enjoys listening to. I will almost always start lessons with beginners who are children with the Alfred method books. These are a very straight forward 3 book set that takes kids from knowing almost nothing technical about music to being able to play and read quite complex arrangements. Once we get our feet planted in this area I will expand into using chord charts and other materials to supplement. Once that is begun we usually start to make up a list of songs that the student may be interested in learning so I can build up the vocabulary to achieve at least a simple arrangement of those songs. My teaching style is patient, thorough, and persistent. For beginning students I start with a simple five note scale, how to hold or sit with the instrument, and an easy tune such as mary had a little lamb or happy birthday; Some students get that in the first lesson and some take a couple weeks everyone has their own process. I like to students to work with method or etude books and have a folder or music notation notebook to keep notes and lessons, organization is up to the student. Read More

My main goal is to enable my students to develop a passion for music! I employ an individual approach for every student according to his/her skills and abilities. Discussing music, listening to a broad range of music are vital elements of my practice. We may talk about composers and performers of different eras and genres, emotional and historical aspects of particular music and I of course encourage students to listen to music at home providing suggestions. I started learning to play guitar when I was about 6 years old. Had a few uncles who taught me how to strum a few chords here and there, and then went through about 4 actual guitar teachers before I found the one that really helped me the most. He helped me enjoy what I was learning. That was the game changer in my playing! Over time, I played in high school bands, church bands, and even occasional solo gigs and now I gig regularly with other like minded professional musicians. Read More
