So I give them a tour of all three and show them the basics before they decide their favorite. The last eleven of those years have been in the San Francisco Bay area at Oakland School for the Arts, teaching and leading large jazz ensembles, orchestra, small groups and music theory classes for grades 6-12. From experience, these are all the basic tools a student needs to work on their fundamentals before diving into full fledged solo pieces for competitions. When I begin with any student, I like to ask what they love, what they wish, and what they'd like to do during their lessons. Depending on the answer, I may start the student with tape on the fretboard, under the strings, outlining the chords for a guitar player.
