My method varies greatly depending on the student. I don't use method books with voice students, since the voice is so personal. I don't believe there's any such thing as a "one size fits all" method--lessons should be designed to meet the needs of the individual. I know that most voice teachers wont teach kids younger than 12 or 13, and I also know that many parents are probably (rightly) suspicious of the teachers who do, for fear that theyll hurt kids' young voices. I always start by just hearing my students sing. I listen for the breathe that they use, where the voice is placed and the tone of the voice. If they sound as though that they could delve into a different genre as well as the genre they choose, I would give them an option to see if one genre feels just as comforting as the other.
