I work very closely with every student customizing lesson plans based on their needs. From the very first lesson, we figure out his/her goals and we write them down. Then I create a lesson plan specifically suited to get them to where they want to be. I often recommend specific songs or artists they should listen to as well as certain books and practice exercises that gravitate towards reaching their goal and most importantly; true potential. I started teaching private voice lessons in 1984 during my junior year at Oberlin. While at Yale, I was awarded a teaching assistantship (1986-88). Since then I have maintained a private studio of voice students in Chicago. Ive had experience both with students who love classical music to those who sing musical theater, spirituals, choral singers, etc. I love teaching and nothing is more gratifying than hearing a students progress. My Teaching Style can be summarised in one sentence - "Progress over Perfection." I believe that the journey is just as important and enjoyable as the destination itself and every student has their own journey and their own destination. My goal as a Voice Teacher is to guide and keep them on track in attaining their musical goals and to aid in whatever way possible. A student's satisfaction, the joy of learning, health (not just vocal health but also psychological) holds the highest importance to me as a Teacher. Read More

I always knew I wanted to study music, and chose Illinois State to do so. While there, I participated in musicals, as well as concert choir and the women's elite chorus "Belle Voix." Since college, I have been writing original cabarets and performing live around the city of Chicago. It's my philosophy that one should never stop learning, so I study regularly with my voice teacher of eight years, Sandra DeAthos, take class at the Bloom School of Jazz (vocal performance and jazz piano), and with the Second City Music Conservatory. My teaching style is designed to give each student a feeling of progress and real growth each lesson. It's essential that every student practice every day for at least 30min in order for my method to really work. In short, I like to be a resource for my students. A person who can present the information as clear and concise as possible. If the student wants to learn just rock or blues, I would show them licks and scales that are primarily used in those styles as well as learn any song they want to learn. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, its important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments help fuel the students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs! Read More
