Practice is essential to growth, but if a student does not enjoy their repertoire, they simply won't practice. Therefore, I work to find common ground with students when selecting songs. I will not force Classical or Jazz, but feel the technique these styles teach are invaluable. Each student will learn music fundamentals and basic reading skills. My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. I also taught voice classes, vocal jazz workshops, and coached a variety of vocal ensembles. The whole purpose of Seattle Glee Clubs was to have fun making music and theater. I have extensive choral, instrumental, vocal jazz ensemble, solo, and theater experience and have presented many recitals of art song, standards, and show tunes. In addition to my own performing, I held the position of bass section leader for the Seattle Jewish Chorale from 2010 2013 and over the years has served as soloist/section leader and music director for synagogues, and various other denominations. For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument. I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate.
