For young piano students I'm a fan of John Thompson method books. I get the student through beginners and then through at least the Grade 1 book. Then I introduce beginner piano literature books to help the student see a real music book. I work on music theory and how to map out a piece of music to learn it better. We start talking about musical style as well. For adults I use basically the same method but usually start with the Alfred all-in-one book. Read More

I began teaching almost 15 years ago, starting with private lessons, and eventually branching out to singing and handbell choirs, inner-city after school programs, outreach programs for the homeless, and adult continuing learning in Boston, MA. I moved to NJ 3 years ago to be closer to my musical theatre career, and have enjoyed teaching private lessons to typical and special needs students of all ages. One of my longest standing students is now attending that college for voice performance as well. I taught mostly younger girls who wanted to sing in choir or the school musical. For beginning piano students I use a combination of Piano Adventures curriculum and Suzuki piano method. I like using Piano Adventures because it is a seamless and easy way to learn how to sightread. Suzuki is used to enhance performance skills and learn traditional repertoire. I supplement with other sheet music on the side and teach scales and technical work additionally. For beginning voice students the majority of initial lessons are spent on technique and students are encouraged to apply it in whatever repertoire they enjoy with occasional assigned peices. Read More
