I don't offer a common style of lessons with all students, instead I design a course of study based upon each student's interests, personality, and the direction they want to go with their music, and after a few sessions of working together, I like to select repertoire that showcases them well and peaks their interests. My experience with vocal coaching started when I was a young girl helping to teach my church's choir parts for songs we had to learn. Once I went to college I joined the Gospel Chorale at Virginia State University where I helped guide the alto section for a month long European Christmas tour. This will help them to expand on their practices at home and feel empowered to create music on their own. I like to keep track of my students accomplishments and enjoy encouraging them along their musical journey. I have no expectations of my students until they show me what they're capable of. After our first two lessons, I start to really stress the importance of practicing on their own time as well. Singing is part muscle memory and your muscles can't memorize what they aren't consistently doing! I use a very kinesthetic approach to my teaching in that I focus on how the entire body feels when my student is singing the correct way versus how it feels when they are singing incorrectly (unhealthily).
