Before returning to PA in the summer of 2017, I taught Preschool-6th Grade general music in Richmond and Oakland, CA. For children and adult piano students, I like using Piano Adventures from primer to the adult version. For guitar, I like using Hal Leonard Guitar Method books. For ukulele, I like to use Hal Leonard ukulele method books. For my little singers I like to use Blankenbelhers Singing Lessons for Little Singers to get them started. For my adults I like to use Absolute Beginners - Voice to show them vocal warm ups, breathing exercises and more. Read More

For beginners and young children, I generally demonstrate and have them practice breathing and certain terminology before we begin singing. Once we begin singing, I use the keyboard and have them practice matching pitch. We then do warm ups, and I teach them a couple phrases that will help with pronunciation and shaping their mouths to make certain sounds. Vocal lessons are a bit different, as everyone has sung to some degree, even it's just to themselves! For beginning vocal students, I start by simply teaching a student how to warm up; from there, we work together to determine what a student's natural strengths and weaknesses are and select repertoire that the student is personally interested in that is also appropriate to their level of proficiency. Either way, expect to learn a bit of music theory along the way and to gain an appreciation for both how and why we do what we do. Read More
