I've been working with children long before I chose my major and started college. Singing was always a big part of my "play". I studied elementary education but even when I was in the general classroom I used music. I enjoyed making up songs to help different skills and ideas stick. My first teaching experience was part of a college class over 10 years ago when as part of the coursework we had to "student teach." Between the anatomy and physiology we were learning, an introduction to various vocal pedagogies, and gaining an understanding of the psychological components of voice study, I was hooked, and I haven't stopped. Once I feel the student has a solid understanding of these fundamentals, I move onto introducing them to repertoire that I think would help in putting these newly learned fundamentals into use as well as allowing them to expand their knowledge on other important factors of singing such as diction, pronunciation, phrasing, keeping a legato line, and possibly language skills depending on the piece. Someone first starting off , We would first concentrate on finger strength. Excercises that are fun but also help build the neccasary tools. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop and hone their skills! I am extremely hands on and I listen very intently during my sessions. I have a great "ear" which is my best asset. I encourage each student to progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by maintaining a stress free environment.
